The Brunchies

Bringing brunch lovers what they crave, whenever hunger strikes.

01. Project Objective

The Brunchies was built to bring brunch to all hours of the day. Most Calgary brunch spots only serve in the morning, so we created a platform that fills this gap. Our goal was to design a website where customers can explore the menu, learn about the brand, and order their favorite dishes anytime—morning or night.

02. Research

Competitive Analysis

Most brunch restaurants in Calgary serve only in the morning. In fact, 75% close before the afternoon. This leaves a gap for people who want breakfast-style meals later in the day. It’s a clear chance to offer something different and meet that demand.

Survey Results

We conducted a quantitative survey targeting frequent brunch consumers (at least twice a month), revealing that 63% wanted the option to order brunch at night, while 71% preferred online ordering over dining in. These insights confirmed the demand for a flexible brunch experience

03. Ideation

To solve the problems we found in research, we used How Might We (HMW) questions. These helped us focus on real user needs and think of creative ways to improve their experience.

04. Solution

We created The Brunchies to fill the gap in late-night brunch options. It’s a restaurant and digital platform that brings brunch to the table anytime—morning or night. With easy online ordering and a welcoming brand, it gives people a new way to enjoy their favorite meals on their schedule.

What Guided This Choice

People wanted brunch on their own schedule—but most restaurants didn’t deliver past noon. So we built a brand and platform that flipped the script. Every design choice supported all-day ordering, from the playful vibe to the clear, crave-worthy menu layout.

05. Wireframing

To refine both the design and usability of the website, we developed a range of Lo-fi wireframes and Hi-fi mockups. The Lo-fi wireframes were instrumental in exploring the basic layout, content placement, and navigation flow, helping us to focus on structure and user experience without the distraction of visual design elements.

The low-fi showed issues with layout, flow, and filters. Their simple style made it easy to test and improve things before adding color and images.

06. Prototyping

The final prototype included a day and night mode. During the day, the site shows a bright and warm design. At night, it switches to a dark theme, matching the idea of all-day brunch.

06. Outcome

Next Steps
Next steps include expanding online ordering by integrating loyalty rewards for repeat customers, enhancing accessibility with features like voice search and menu filtering for dietary preferences, and iterating based on user feedback to optimize user flow and mobile responsiveness.
Reflections
This project showed how good design is both useful and emotional. Every choice we made focused on the user. By listening to real feedback, we made the site easier to use and more enjoyable. We learned that design works best when it solves real problems and makes people feel welcome.
